MY THOUGHTS
This is the first OPPO device I’ve owned, although I’ve had 3 OnePlus phones before, and they’re part of the same company. I’ve had all sorts of phones over the years; LG, HTC, iPhone, OnePlus, Samsung, to name a few, my previous phone being the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, which is a fantastic phone, I just became a little bored of OneUI. How does the OPPO compare? Well, it’s my favourite phone I’ve ever owned. However, it does come with its negatives, which I will be stating, along with it’s many positives.
My original fear was with the processor, it’s a MediaTech Dimensity 9500. Most of my recent phones use a Snapdragon processor, which are known to be more powerful and reliable. If you’re a benchmarking person, yes the Snapdragon Elite series are more powerful, however, in actual real world use, there is no difference. Not once has my phone lagged or overheated, it’s been flawless. I will say, I’m not a mobile gamer, but power-wise, there are no issues at all.
In-fact, the MediaTech is supposedly more efficient when it comes to battery life, speaking of which, is fantastic. It has a huge 7500mAh battery, utilizing the new silicone-carbon style battery, which allows for a much higher capacity. I usually get 2 days before I have to charge it, sometimes more. The slated 80W fast charging, is not a lie per se, but also not entirely truthful, only reaching 80W in very specific conditions.
The camera’s are fantastic, although it does depend on how it is used and who you ask. The master mode is amazing, the Hasselblad high-res modes, are also fantastic. If you want just a really good ‘point-and-shoot’ camera, it will absolutely do the job, but it’s full potential will not be tapped into. The front facing selfie camera is good, not great, with the biggest complaint about it, and a lot of the camera’s, being its overuse of AI. Mostly, I have found it to be fine, except when zoomed in to a high level, when it can come across a little ‘cartoony’. For me, the camera’s are amazing, the ultrawide is great, the macro too, its just very good, I definitely prefer it to the S24 Ultra, but I do really miss the dedicated astro-photography mode.
ColorOS is super smooth, there isn’t much bloatware, most can be uninstalled. Some people do find it a bit ‘iPhone-y’ but in my opinion, that’s a compliment, because iOS is renowned for its smoothness, and intuitiveness, so personally I don’t mind it. Although, the camera button on the side is not only an Apple-clone, but equally as pointless, being in the wrong place, slightly too far along the side for it to be usable.
The speakers are probably the weakest aspect of the phone, lacking bass and depth. It can be ‘fixed’ using apps like Wavelet or PowerAmp, but not to an amazing level. If the speakers are that important to you, this phone is not for you.
The updates, in the UK, have been very inconsistent, and if you ever have to deal with customer service, scooping out your eyeballs with a rusty spoon, is a preferable option. It is horrific and something OPPO has to address to become a comparable level to an Apple or a Samsung.
Accessories such as cases and screen protectors, are not as easily available as the big brands, but there are good options on AliExpress, and OnePlus 15 screen protectors also fit perfectly.
THE VERDICT
The Find X9 Pro has so much going for it, there is some room for growth, but on the whole, it’s a fantastic device, that will not disappoint. I don’t think I can quite give it 5 stars, so I’ll go with 4 stars.
I’d love to compare it to the upcoming X9 Ultra, but I unfortunately can’t afford it.
